Subspecialty Certification

Certification in a subspecialty granted by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association) through the AOBOG (American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology) after June 1, 2002 is time-limited and requires recertification every six (6) years.  Certification in a subspecialty that was granted prior to June 1, 2002 is lifetime and does not require recertification.  In order to maintain certification status a diplomate must remain an active member of the American Osteopathic Association.

PROCESS
Candidates for the subspecialty examination must meet the following criteria:

have received primary certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the AOA through the AOBOG

have received approval from the ACOOG (American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists) for all years of osteopathic subspecialty training

have received approval from the AOA for all  years of ACGME subspecialty training

have established subspecialty board eligibility

have constructed a log of clinical activity subsequent to fellowship training (to download the Instructions For Preparation Of Logs, right click and select "Save Target As" for your subspecialty  Maternal Fetal Medicine Reproductive Endocrinology Gynecologic Oncology)

be the primary author of a research paper relative to the subspecialty which has been published in a peer reviewed journal or accepted for publication  (In this case a letter from the editor confirming that the paper has been accepted in it's final form without need of further revision must be provided.)

hold a current unrestricted medical license in the state (s) and or territory (s) where practice is being conducted

be a member in good standing of the AOA or the Canadian Osteopathic Association for a continuous period of two (2) years immediately prior to the date of certification

 be able to show evidence of conformity to the standards as set forth in the Code of Ethics of the AOA

Following successful completion of the subspecialty oral examination, the AOBOG will submit a recommendation to the BOS (Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists) of the AOA that the candidate receive certification in the applicable subspecialty and certification will be granted following approval by the BOS.  Continued membership in the AOA is required in order for certification to remain active.
