Certification in a subspecialty granted by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association) through the AOBOG (American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology) after June 1, 2002 is time-limited and requires recertification every six (6) years. Certification in a subspecialty that was granted prior to June 1, 2002 is lifetime and does not require recertification. In order to maintain certification status a diplomat must remain an active member of the American Osteopathic Association.
PROCESS
Requirements To Sit For The
Subspecialty (MFM, RE, GO) Examination

Must have received primary certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the AOA through the AOBOG |
|
|
Must have been a member in good standing of the AOA or the Canadian Osteopathic Association for a minimum of the most current 2 years |
|
|
Must have satisfactorily completed fellowship training which has been approved by the AOA |
|
|
Must exhibit conformity to the standards as set forth in the Code of Ethics of the AOA |
|
|
Must have prepared a log of clinical activity subsequent to fellowship training (refer to Subspecialty Examination application for log instructions) |

|
Must be the primary author of a research paper relative to the subspecialty which meets professional and publishable standards as determined by a review committee of peers, appointed by the AOBOG Subspecialty Committee. The applicant must have had significant input in the planning and execution of the paper and the paper must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be an original research project (case review is not acceptable); 2. Must add to the existing body of medical knowledge of the subspecialty |

Must hold a current unrestricted medical license in the state (s) and or territory (s) where practice is being conducted |
|
|
Must submit the required application along with all specified documentation and fees by the application deadline date |
|
|
Must have been accepted for examination by the AOBOG Subspecialty Credentials Committee |
Note: The AOA requires that physicians maintain membership in good standing of the AOA or the Canadian Osteopathic Association for a continuous period of two (2) years immediately prior to the date of certification; continued membership in the AOA is required in order for certification to remain active.
Following successful completion of the oral examination, the AOBOG will submit a recommendation to the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists (BOS) of the AOA that the candidate receive certification in the subspecialty. Certification is granted by the AOA following approval by the BOS.
