Certification granted by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association) through the AOBOG (American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology) after June 1, 2002 is time-limited and requires recertification every six (6) years.  Certification that was granted prior to June 1, 2002 is lifetime and does not require recertification.  In order to maintain certification status a diplomate must remain an active member in good standing of the American Osteopathic Association.

PROCESS

The certification process consists of two separate examinations: a written examination and a clinical examination. At this time there is not limit to the number of times that a candidate can sit for the examinations, nor is Board Eligibility a prerequisite.

Candidates for the written examination must meet the following  criteria:

be a graduate of an AOA accredited college of osteopathic medicine

be a resident in or a graduate of an AOA or an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) approved post-doctoral training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Candidates for the clinical examination must meet the following criteria:

have passed the AOBOG written examination;

have completed an AOA approved internship;

have received approval of all years of residency training from the ACOOG (American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists) REC (Residency Evaluating Committee);

have received AOA approval of all ACGME residency training;

hold a current unrestricted medical license in the state(s) and or territory(s) where practice is being conducted;

 be a member in good standing of the AOA or the Canadian Osteopathic Association for a continuous period of two (2) years immediately prior to the date of certification;

 be able to show evidence of conformity to the standards as set forth in the Code of Ethics of the AOA.

Following successful completion of the written and clinical examinations, the AOBOG will submit a recommendation to the BOS (Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists) of the AOA that the candidate receive certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology; certification is granted by the AOA following approval by the BOS.  Continued membership in the AOA is required in order for certification to remain active.
