Re-Certification

The following documents are dynamic, and if changes have occurred, they may not yet be reflected on the Web Versions.  Viewing the Certification documents indicates acceptance of the Disclaimer

Certification granted by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association) through the AOBOG (American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology) after June 1, 2002 is time-limited and requires recertification every six (6) years.  Certification that was granted prior to June 1, 2002 is lifetime and does not require recertification.  In order to maintain certification status a diplomate must remain an active member in good standing of the American Osteopathic Association.

Maintenance of Certification

Physicians who were granted certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, and Reproductive Endocrinology after June 1, 2002 were issued 6 year time-limited certification. In order to maintain certification the re-certification process must be successfully completed prior to the certification expiration date indicated on the certificate of certification.

It is the physician’s responsibility to be aware of their certification expiration date and to initiate the re-certification process at their discretion. If the process is not successfully completed prior to the expiration date, certification becomes inactive until completed.

Physicians electing to re-certify prior to 24 months of their certification expiration date and successfully complete the re-certification examination during that time-frame:

The new certificate will expire on December 31, 6 years from date of examination.

Physicians electing to re-certify within 24 months of their certification expiration date and successfully complete the re-certification examination during that time-frame

The new certificate will expire on December 31, 6 years from their original expiration date.

Following successful completion of the re-certification examination, the AOBOG will submit a recommendation to the BOS (Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists) of the AOA that the candidate receive re-certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology or the appropriate subspecialty.  Certification is granted by the AOA following approval by the BOS.  Continued membership in the AOA is required in order for certification to remain active.
